The Minix-vmd distribution falls under several different copyrights. Read the following points carefully, because you have agree with the terms of all licenses if you want to use Minix-vmd or parts thereof. 1. The Minix kernel. Many files in the directories /usr/include, /usr/src/sys, and /usr/src/cmd, and a few files in /usr/src/lib are derived from Minix 1.6.16 written by Andrew S. Tanenbaum. These files are copyrighted by Prentice-Hall, Inc. See 7. for the Minix license to use. It is basically a "free for educational use" type of license. Read it to find out if you can agree with it, otherwise do not use Minix. Changes to the files in the above mentioned directories and new files added by Philip Homburg and Kees Bot are copyrighted by them (see 6.). 2. The ACK C compiler. The C compiler binaries in /usr/lib/ack, and the runtime support library sources in /usr/src/lib/ack are derived from the Amsterdam Compiler Kit. The compiler may only be used under Minix variants. Example of an ACK copyright notice: (c) copyright 1988 by the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. 3. BSD sources. Files derived from the Berkeley Software Distribution can be found mostly in the /usr/src/bsd directory. These files can be recognized by copyright notices like this one: Copyright (c) 1991 The Regents of the University of California. 4. X11 sources. Files for the X window system can be found in the optional packages labeled "XF86-N.M". The files are copyrighted by the X Consortium and the XFree86 Project. These copyrights are roughly the same as the BSD copyright. The files can be recognized by copyright notices like these: Copyright (c) 1989 X Consortium Copyright (c) 1994 by The XFree86 Project, Inc. 5. GNU sources. Files obtained from the Free Software Foundation or other software that is protected by the GNU General Public License can be found in /usr/src/gnu. Special care has been taken to keep other software from being infested by the GPL. Any GPL protected files found outside the main gnu source directory are directly used by a GNU tool and only by this tool. The libraries used by the gcc compiler do not contain any GNU code whatsoever, except for the runtime support necessary for the code produced by the compiler. This support code is protected by the special GNU library copyright that does not carry over to the binaries it is compiled into. The copyright message can usually be found in the files COPYING or LICENSE accompanying a package. 6. Software collected, written by, or modified by Philip Homburg or Kees Bot. In /usr/src/vmd one can find software that can not be placed in one of the categories above. This software is protected by copyrights held by the original authors granting permission to distribute and use these sources freely. Note that even if no clear copyright message is present these files are still copyrighted according to the Berne Convention. The distribution named "Minix-vmd", and the software written or modified by Philip Homburg or Kees Bot falls under this (BSD-style) copyright: Copyright (c) 1996 by Philip Homburg and Kees Bot.
